New-Concept S Toner for Color Printers

Conventional Toner Composite S Toner

Canon's ultrasmall, spherically shaped S Toner was born from a completely novel concept.

Because conventional toners for color electrophotography are produced by pulverizing coloring materials into tiny particles, not even the most accurate tools can achieve a uniform shape and size for individual particles.

On the other hand, in producing S Toner Canon adds wax and a monomer to the coloring material, then causes a polymerization reaction by applying heat, and solidifies the resulting material is solidified. This process is similar to mixing oil and water, then stirring the mixture to disperse tiny oil droplets of a uniform size, and finally causing a chemical reaction to solidify each droplet. Like the oil droplets, each particle of S Toner is spherical in shape and of a uniform size. This secret makes it possible for S Toner to provide image output with incredible sharpness and beauty.

The creative capabilities and endeavors of many engineers were required to turn the concept of "producing toner in the same way as salad dressing" into reality. One such vital development was the idea of inserting wax into a core of toner particles.

In conventional color electrophotographic systems, when toner is applied to paper using heat and pressure, the fixing roller was coated with oil to ensure that it would not adhere to the paper. ( see image on Intermidiate Transfer Drum for Superior Paper Management).

However, this oil made the output look glossy, and made it difficult to write on output pages. For this reason, early full-color laser beam printers were not widely popular in offices.

With S Toner, the wax in the core of each particle is released during fixing and spreads between the roller and paper. This action completely removes the need for fixing oil, and no-glare, non-glossy images can be output. Furthermore, S Toner makes it possible highly reliable, high-image-quality printing in full color on both sides of paper, a task that is difficult with printers that use fixing oil. S Toner is opening new doorways to full-color printing in off ices.
