LCD Color Filters
Liquid crystal displays (LCDs) have come into regular use not only in laptop PCs,
but also in desktop models. Canon's high-precision printing technologies are at work
in making these displays possible.
LCDs have a sandwich structure, with liquid crystals inserted between a substrate
inset with a color filter and a transistor board. The color filter is a glass plate
imprinted with a matrix of the colors red, green and blue, the three primary colors.
It is one of the most important components of LCDs, playing a deciding role in display
quality.
Canon's Bubble Jet printing technologies have been adapted for the production of
LCD color filters. Previously, these devices were produced through photolithography.
However, leaps in the precision of Bubble Jet printing techniques made it possible
to accurately distribute ink in an area the width of human hair.
Printing on a scale that allows errors no greater than the micron level is achieved
by the XY stage used in a mask aligner, a device for high-precision processes in
semiconductor production. The merger of these two Canon technologies helped us achieve
low-cost, highquality color filters. In other words, Bubble Jet technologies are
contributing to the' growth of the LCD market worldwide.
