Color Gear Color-Matching Technology
When using color laser beam printers, Bubble Jet printers and other high-image-quality
color printers, color-matching technology is a vital element that makes it possible
to reproduce colors according to user preferences.
Usually, users adjust colors according to what they see on their PC screen, then
output images on a color printer. However, while colors on a PC display are expressed
in the three primary colors (RGB), printers use colors constructed in CMYK, making
perfectly matched output impossible. Printers also generally have a narrower scale
of color reproduction than displays, meaning that some color ranges visible on the
monitor cannot be output. Color-matching technologies compress the color range of
displays to match that of printers, which allows printers to reproduce colors the
way users see them on-screen.
Using the constant hues visible to the human eye, we developed a compression method
for non-linear color spaces. The result is a radical improvement in color matching
precision from conventional techniques.
Canon's color matching technology not only matches colors with PC displays, but it
also incorporates device-matching methods to ensure unified color reproduction and
a color-proofing function to match colors with those of printed materials. For example,
in offices differences in the characteristics of color input/output devices, such
as scanners, digital cameras, displays and printers, inevitably cause subtle changes
in the shades of color images. Canon's Color Gear system matches colors by taking
these individual characteristics under consideration.
Color Gear has the ability to provide optimal color spaces for any type of image,
from text, graphics and other diagrams to photographic images. In addition, using
a profile containing data on thousands of colors, Color Gear is able to compensate
for differences in printing paper, ink and toner to accomplish highly precise color
matching. The system also achieves color matching suited to the special features
of Canon's color laser beam printers and full-color image scanners. It can be used
with standard color management systems, including Apple's ColorSync or ICM for Microsoft
Windows. Fullcolor image data can be perfectly reproduced, even if it is transmitted
over networks.
