Bubble Jet Inks
The development of high-performance inks and print media is a vital factor in achieving
the full image quality of which Bubble Jet printers are capable.
The ink used in Bubble Jet printers is instantaneously heated to more than 300'C,
meaning that inks for these printers must retain their stability at high temperatures.
The ink must also not become clogged in printer nozzles, and ink droplets must be
spherically shaped and accurately affix themselves to the output media.

Safety-the top priority in
Canon's ink development
At the same time, today's output media are not limited to paper, but include fabrics
such as cotton, silk and synthetic fibers, and have even expanded to leather and
metals. At Canon, we worked from our knowledge and technologies in fields such as
organic, inorganic and high polymer chemistry related to solvents, dyes and pigments
to develop high-performance inks. These inks are subjected to stringent safety standards
before they are inserted into Bubble Jet ink cartridges and released for sale.
Canon also developed Professional Photo Paper as the ideal medium for outputting
highquality images on Bubble Jet printers.
On the ink absorption layer on the surface of this paper are special inorganic ultrafine
particles. Processes including mirror-furnished surfacing are applied to achieve
color reproduction and glossiness on a par with prints on highly transparent silver-halide
photo print paper. Furthermore, the ultrafine particles on the ink absorption layer
receive ink instantaneously, preventing ink spreading and blurring, and ensuring
the formation of sharp spherical dots. Fast ink drying and high water resistance
are accomplished thanks to a thicker base paper layer made from the same materials
as silverhalide photo paper. With these products, Canon has achieved all of the elements
necessary for photo printing.
